Teach Me the Web

Doug March is a web designer currently working for Mixx, an information aggregating website. He spoke to the students this past Friday, Nov 7th, 2008 (yes, I'm doing a much better job of posting in a more timely manner). His presentation included an introduction of himself, some of his background, and then he jumped into Search Engine Optimization. He did a great job of answering one of the most popular questions I get from students (and clients for that matter), " How do I get my site to show up and rank highly on Google". The short answer is there are many things you can do to enhance the findability of your website. Keeping his audience in mind Doug shared 5 key points to making your website findable by search engines; while most of his comments directly applied to Google, his points are non vendor specific. The kids really seemed into it, Doug has a natural talent for speaking, especially to young people (I don't know if he knew that). I know I say positive things a good bit about all my speakers but he really did a good job!

NOTE: If you read this blog regularly you may notice that the articles entitled guest speaker reactions have been getting shorter and shorter.
