Guest Speaker Reactions: LuAnne Bell
LuAnne Bell is the Vice President of Business Development at Blue Atlas Interactive based out of Germantown, MD. I know LuAnne from working for BAI this past summer as a web developer (my friend works there and connected us). Primarily, LuAnne is the face of Blue Atlas Interactive. She handles much of the new client swooning, communicates with clients on a daily basis, and works to gather requirements from them for projects, and much more. It was gathering requirements which she spoke about which I think was a fantastic topic because the students need to learn that it is hard work getting out of the client exactly what they need.
She discussed the flaws, trials, and tribulations of squeezing out those requirements like the simple fact that your client doesn’t understand web speak and won’t know how to tell you what they want. Also, there is a divide between what they want and what they need; the client is usually not the best person to judge what they need. She talked about converting those needs into real working devices; like the client wants to be able to edit his/her site, so for development that translates into developing or using a Content Management System.
It was a great opening session, looking forward to it again next year.
