Its a Girl

On Christmas eve my wife and I had the early Christmas present of finding the sex of our child.  We arrived at the doctors’ office at 8am.  When we were finally seen the technician asked if we knew the sex, “No”, we replied.  Do you want to know?  An eager “Yes” we replied.  She went on to say how the baby was in an awkward position and how she wasn’t sure that she would be able to identify the sex.  Now, keep in mind here that at the time my wife was 5 months along, which is 2 months past the first moment you can identify the sex.  We had been to 2 other sonograms where the technician could not see the genitalia because the baby was in an awkward position.  So, when she told us that she might not be able to identify the sex I said, “That’s ok, we packed a lunch and we’re not leaving till you can see it”.  To which she replied, “Well, you’re going to be here by yourself because we close at 11:30”.  And a Merry Christmas to you too lady!

But lucky us, a few minutes later she pointed out three lines which outlined the vagina.  I sure didn’t see it but that’s what she goes to training for.  Later the doctor came in and confirmed the identification.  My wife and I were beaming.  I wasn’t hoping for anything other than a healthy child.  I think its messed up for parents to say they’re hoping for one sex or the other because it sounds as if they’re going to be disappointed if its the opposite sex.  I don’t think that’s becoming of a future parent.  I think life is such a gift that we should be happy with what we can get.

However, with that said, it was around then that I realized that every imagination I had produced of the future with me and my child was with a boy.  Not for any reason, I come from a family of 3 boys and my brother has a baby boy.  We joke that my mother was cursed.  Needless to say I had a paradigm shift (a change of perspective, to you high schoolers reading) and I am grateful.  So grateful in admiration of my future daughter.

Also, we decided upon a name for her, Riley Elizabeth Brown.  We can’t wait to meet you in early May Riley.  Love Mom and Dad!
