Teach me the Web Re-Launch

Content

August 30, 2008

Hello!  I am proud to announce the relaunch of teachmetheweb.

So many fun things have happened.  For starters, I have redesigned the site to make information more accessible, emphasize and de-emphasize certain aspects of the site, and to add features.  The prior design was a quick work created by a student and myself which looked alot like A List Apart.  I felt that if I am going to teach web design and want to make this a true resource for teachers and students then I had better have a unique design.  Check.

I also wanted to shift focus of my blog from the site.  I don’t want to be shoving it down my students throats like I was with the prior design.  With that said, I implemented a behavior I have been itching to for some time now.  A user can choose to hide the blog preview on the homepage and it will never show up again, unless he/she decides to view it.  This site has been and will always be about my students so I want my blog to be an optional portion for them.  Check.

Since my students check this site daily I also wanted to move the information they need to the front of the site so they don’t have to click at all to get the information they need.  Check.

I have also set a goal of frequency of posts.  As I am so busy (teaching full time, freelancing, graduate school, and life) I wanted a way to make it easier to keep on top of my blog.  I bring in guest speakers to chat with my students so I thought why don’t I begin interviewing some of these people (and others) and posting on my site.  This will offer a great resource for my students and make it much easier for me to keep on top of my site’s blog.

My students do awesome work, but you wouldn’t know it because I don’t show it.  I wanted to add a place where I could post my students stellar work and some projects my students and I work on.

I still have a few things to do though.  After making the site I feel the design is too dark.  So I am going to be working on a lighter site design, then maybe I’ll offer a styleswitcher, who knows.  Maybe there’s a podcast in my future.

I hope you enjoy the site and find something useful.  Thanks.
